My heart breaks for Australia.
Australia was my home for two years during my university days and my getaway from everything that was happening in Singapore back then. To see it in such a state breaks my heart.
I've known that bushfires are common during this time of the year but I didn't know the severity of it until recently... when I was reading articles about it and especially the lives and helpless wildlife whom/which perished along with the uncontrollable fire. I couldn't help but to tear.
Last Sunday while watching the news, I asked my partner if we could do something about it, perhaps fly there to help. But obviously with zero knowledge on fire fighting and animal rescue, there's just no use for us there. I knew I had to play a part somehow.
On Monday when I was working at the pop-up, I spoke to an Australian customer, Nani, on the situation happening down under. I asked why isn't the government doing anything, and she simply said that it wasn't that they aren't doing anything; they did but it was a little too late, and naturally people are angry.
Nani bought a few of our earrings from the Timeless range, which is a sustainable sub-brand of Thrifty Thieves. This was then I immediately decided to donate 100% of Timeless' profits for the month of January to the Australian Red Cross.
Why Timeless some might ask. Unlike Thrifty Thieves, everything from Timeless is made by hand. I wanted to offer something that was meaningful and made with blood, sweat and tears. Something that wouldn't disappear when the trends fade, something that's timeless.
The donation may not much as compared to what the celebrities are giving, but as a small business owner, I'd like to do whatever I can.
You could also choose to donate directly to the following organisations (got this list from Chris Hemsworth's Instagram):
- Australian Red Cross
- St. Vincent De Paul Society
- Celeste Barber Fund for the Trustee for NSW Rural Fire Service & Brigades Donation Fund
- World Wildlife Fund
- Wildlife Warriors
- NSW Rural Fire Service
- Help Those Affected on GOFUNDME
Every dollar counts. Play your part.
